The Forgiver (Ghafir)
Verses 47-50 GROUP_1240 40.47-50
47
وَإِذْ يَتَحَاجُّونَ فِي النَّارِ فَيَقُولُ الضُّعَفَاء لِلَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمْ تَبَعًا فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّغْنُونَ عَنَّا نَصِيبًا مِّنَ النَّارِ
When they dispute with one another in the Fire, the weak will say to those who deemed themselves mighty, ‘We were your followers; will you then relieve us of some of the Fire?’
48
قَالَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا إِنَّا كُلٌّ فِيهَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ حَكَمَ بَيْنَ الْعِبَادِ
But those who had been arrogant will say, ‘We are all in this together. God has judged between His servants.’
49
وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ فِي النَّارِ لِخَزَنَةِ جَهَنَّمَ ادْعُوا رَبَّكُمْ يُخَفِّفْ عَنَّا يَوْمًا مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ
Those in the Fire will say to its keepers, ‘Implore your Lord to relieve our torment for one day,’
50
قَالُوا أَوَلَمْ تَكُ تَأْتِيكُمْ رُسُلُكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالُوا فَادْعُوا وَمَا دُعَاء الْكَافِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍ
but they will say, ‘Did not your messengers come to you with clear signs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ The keepers will say, ‘Then pray [for help] yourselves.’ But the prayer of those who deny the truth is of no avail.

Commentary
(a) In these verses a scene from Hell is depicted. Those who had assumed great positions in this world will forget their so-called greatness in the hereafter. Now, the common people, who were so proud of their heroes, will express their displeasure with them. Those who were not prepared to accept the Truth in this world will now humbly bow down before it. But this submissiveness in the Hereafter will be of no avail to any one.
